Hollie’s research investigates the relationship between colour, and layered surfaces.
Alongside her Fine Art degree, Hollie has maintained a lifelong passion for painting. Working primarily in acrylics and oil, she draws inspiration from the dramatic coastlines and landscapes of County Down. Her paintings often depict atmospheric seascapes, sailing boats, and familiar local scenery, with the Mourne Mountains remaining a recurring source of inspiration. Through expressive colour, layered brushwork, and a sensitivity to changing light, she seeks to capture both the beauty and emotional character of the local places she paints.
About
Hollie Massey, from Bangor, Northern Ireland, is a final-year Fine Art student at Ulster University's Belfast School of Art, where her studio practice explores the expanded field of painting.
Hollie’s work has been exhibited at Arts for All, Belfast, and at Ards and North Down Museum, as well as in a range of exhibitions hosted by local businesses. Alongside exhibiting, Hollie's paintings continue to be collected both locally and internationally.
In 2025, Hollie was the overall winner of the Translink × Belfast School of Art Public Art Competition, where she was commissioned to create a large-scale Perspex sculpture for Belfast Grand Central Station.
As Hollie continues to develop her contemporary practice alongside her studies, she remains committed to exploring the expressive potential of colour, material, and place. Whether creating large-scale contemporary installations or evocative coastal paintings, her work is united by a fascination with colour, light, texture, and the emotional resonance of landscape.
